I apologize ahead of time if anyone reading this gets offended. If you are deeply religious or a regular church goer you may find this a bit sacrilegious, but I promise I do not mean any harm. I wanted to tell you all about one of my favorite bars in Atlanta, “Church.” Well, the real name is Sister Louisa’s CHURCH of the Living Room & Ping Pong Emporium. I know, it’s a mouthful but it really is a great bar.
Let me paint you a picture of this place…it is on the corner of Boulevard Ave. and Edgewood Ave. in the Sweet Auburn district of Atlanta. It is down the street from Ebeneezer Baptist Church, the church where Martin Luther King Jr. pastored. You walk in through two large wooden and glass doors, there is a coat hook to either side of the doors full of Priest robes. I cannot lie I have tried these!
You sit down at the bar, which is their alter, order some Spiritual Sangria. I don’t know what is in this, but it is by far the best Sangria I have ever had! AND I make my own which I am pretty proud of…so that is saying something. Don’t drink more than two though, or you will not feel very good the next day. Trust me, I can drink my fair share but something in this gets me every time.
Behind the bar is a medley of pseudo religious paraphernalia including a dogs humping each other in front of a cross. Sister Louisa, or Grant, the bar’s owner became known around Atlanta years ago for his unique art. It is essentially paint-by-number religious paintings hilariously captioned. Really, they are very funny! My favorite is his rendition of The Last Supper…I won’t spoil what the caption says, you need to see it yourself! I will say this is all down in humor and not to offend anyone.
You can then head upstairs to find yourself surrounded by Church Pews, leather couches, various sporting trophies and a ping-pong table. The crowd is diverse and always welcoming. I would definitely check this out if you are ever in the area, you will not regret it! And if you are hungry walk across the street to Sound Table for a quick bite.
My apologies…I got carried away when I was here so most of my pictures are of me and my friends and not of the all the cool things in the bar. Hope you enjoy!
