Paradise on a nearly deserted island…Koh Rong, Cambodia

Happy hump day…just a couple more days until Labor Day weekend is here.  This weekend has always been bittersweet for me, it signals the end of summer but brings with it the beginning of football season.  That being said I will be adorned in orange and rooting on my Tennessee Vols this weekend from Malaysia…go vols!

It’s hard to believe that just a week ago we were on a twelve-hour bus ride heading back to Bangkok from Cambodia.  After a few days in Phnom Penh it was time for some relaxation and enjoyment, the prison and killing fields really took an emotional toll on both RG and myself.  Our original plan had been to head back to Bangkok, but we decided at the last minute to head south and explore Cambodia’s beaches.  And we were not disappointed!

After a couple of nights on a mainland beach we found ourselves on a three-hour ferry heading to the island of Koh Rong…and this is where we found paradise.  The island itself is large, approximately the size of Hong Kong, but you would never know it.  Very few people live here, and there are even fewer tourists.  We found some of the softest and whitest sand beaches I have ever seen, calm waters to wade in and crashing waves to ride.  I’m not sure how many hotels are on the island…there is a backpackers corner…but we found our slice of heaven at Palm Beach Bungalows.  It stands alone next to a fishing village on the East side of the island.  With only 18 bungalows you will never feel overcrowded here.  We slept in a comfortable wooden bungalow just steps from the beach, and relaxed on our own hammock and met another traveling couple to bond with over hikes on the beach and homemade Bailey’s.  I could have stayed here forever.  Unfortunately we could only stay for two nights as we had to make our way back to Bangkok to pay our rent and be responsible.

But we did manage to wake up early and watch the sunrise on our last day…these pictures don’t even do it justice.  Hope you enjoy!
